Golaghat, Sept. 25: The Golaghat district unit of the All Assam Scheduled Caste Students’ Union today staged a protest against the inclusion of non-Mising villages in the ensuing Mising Autonomous Council election.
Nearly 500 people, under the aegis of the Golaghat unit of the All Assam SC Students’ Union, Anushusita Jati Parishad and the Ana Mising Suraksha Samiti, gheraoed the office of the deputy commissioner here.
They demanded that non-Mising villages be kept outside the purview of the council and the names of non-Mising voters be deleted from the council’s voter list .
The protesters alleged that the non-Mising villages of Ronga Gora, Panbari, Goroimari, Siljuri, Kakojuri, No. 2 Porongnia, Boraikhowa Chapori, Balijan, Alami and Digholi Ati under Bokakhat sub-division have been wrongly included in the council and should be dropped.
A delegation of the protesters later held a discussion with officials of the Golaghat district administration and submitted a memorandum with a copy to the chief minister, minister of state for welfare of plains tribes & backward classes and the chief electoral officer of Assam.
After the discussion, the district administration agreed to delete the names of non-Mising voters from the voter list on receipt of application till 4pm today.
The circle officer of Golaghat revenue circle, N.A. Ali, told The Telegraph that the district administration had decided that in a village where only 10 to 20 per cent of the people are from the Mising community, elections would be held taking into account only that minor percentage and not the entire village.
He said the district administration will convene a meeting on delimitation of the area in connection with polling station, voters’ names and other related matters on November 8.
