Agartala, Nov .12: In separate incidents yesterday, suspected National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants kidnapped four labourers, besides gangraping a tribal woman.

A group of NLFT rebels abducted four masons from Malidhar Mukh village under Chhawmanu police station.

Police said a tribal woman, Sabamati Debbarma (35), resident of Uttar Kathalcherra village under Manu police station in Dhalai district, had gone to the nearby forest yesterday to collect bamboo.A group of suspected NLFT militants hacked her to death after gangraping her. Police personnel from Manu recovered the body.

Probe ordered

Superintendent of police of West Garo Hills O. Pasi has ordered an inquiry into the allegations of bribery and foul play levelled against several employees of his office, reports our Shillong correspondent.

Several students who had cleared the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) examination had yesterday alleged that they were asked to pay Rs 500 by an official of the police department to procure verification certificates.

However, none of the students have so far lodged any official complaint. Pasi said though he had not received any formal complaint, he would get to bottom of the affair. “I have appointed additional superintendent of police D.P. Marak to head the inquiry,” he added.

Pasi said action would be taken against any person found guilty of taking bribe. He, however, warned that if the allegations were proved to be false, the students who had made the charges would have to face legal action.

Questioning why the students had not reported the matter to him or the deputy SP, Pasi said the whole affair could be an attempt “to malign the reputation of my office.

“Verification of a person’s antecedents is supposed to be confidential and should be routed through the proper channels. When we try to entertain personal requests, we invite problems,” he added.
