Guwahati, Nov. 21: Assam police today disclosed the names of nine Ulfa militants who are allegedly planning a major attack following instructions from the outfit’s top brass.

They are Bosa Singh, Pinku Phukon, Upen Borgohain, Bimal Kalita, Swadhin Ray, Rajani Kanta Singha, Pulak Bharali, Hitesh Ray and Akon Moran.

A senior police officer said some of them had already entered Assam and were planning to carry out strikes.

“We have beefed up security at oil and other vital installations throughout the state,” he said.

Assam police have also uploaded the names of these militants in the “most wanted list” on its official website assampolice.com.

The officer said Ulfa has been desperately trying to carry out a few strikes in the run-up to the outfit’s “protest day” on November 27 and in reaction to the recent arrests of its foreign secretary Sasha Choudhury and finance secretary Chitrabon Hazarika .

Following the recent blast on railway tracks in Golaghat district, leading to the burning of train wagons carrying fuel from Numaligarh Refinery Ltd, Assam police are not taking things lightly. They are reviewing security arrangements at all vital installations across the state.

The inspector-general of police (security), G.P. Singh, has been camping in Upper Assam for the last couple of days, monitoring security arrangements at vital installations since that area is rich in tea and oil.

Singh held several rounds of meetings with top police officers and the authorities of Oil India Ltd, ONGC and airport officials in Upper Assam in the last few days and reviewed the security arrangements.

Security at the refinery town of Bongaigaon has been beefed up.

At least three Ulfa militants whose names figured on the list published today by Assam police are from Bongaigaon district.
