Guwahati, Jan. 27: The CID is investigating any possible role of former agriculture minister Nilamani Sen Deka in an Rs 700-crore scam involving the state agriculture department during his tenure.
A source today said though they are yet to find any conclusive proof of Deka's involvement in the scam, he is under scanner and likely to be examined by the CID in this case.
On January 20, former Assam social welfare minister Akon Bora was interrogated by the officials of the vigilance and anti-corruption bureau of the state police in connection with a scam involving the department, which he headed in the former Tarun Gogoi government.
The bureau has also summoned two other former ministers of the Gogoi government, Gautam Roy and Ajanta Neog, in connection with the social welfare scam, as they were also in-charge of the department during Congress rule in the state.
The source said a minister cannot shirk responsibility for wrongdoings in his department by merely saying that he was not aware about it as laid down in the Assam Rules of Executive Business, 1968, for transaction of the business of the government.
Gogoi, however, said the attempt to link his ministers with alleged scams is nothing but political vendetta by the BJP-led government in the state.
The source said the case related to the alleged scam in the agriculture department was based on an FIR lodged by Rajib Deka, the publicity secretary of the NGO, Assam Public Works, in September 2014, alleging a Rs 700-crore scam in implementation of the Rashtriya KrishiVikash Yojana and Bringing Green Revolution to the Eastern India schemes in the state.
Though the case was registered in September 2014, investigation gathered steam after the Sarbananda Sonowal government assumed power in the state in May last year.
The CID has filed its first chargesheet in connection the agriculture scam, naming three agriculture department officials and two contractors, at the court of special judge, Assam, here on January 7.
