Kokrajhar, Aug. 5: A new political party called United People's Party (UPP) was floated in Kokrajhar today with promises of good governance.

Former Rajya Sabha MP and ex-president of the All Bodo Students Union (Absu) U.G. Brahma is the UPP president and ex-BTC member Pradip Daimary its general secretary. The party will have nine vice-presidents and 13 secretaries. It will have 23 organising secretaries and 17 CWC members from the four BTAD districts. The BTC member from Chirang, Maoti Brahma Hazowary, is the treasurer.

The announcement was made at a special convention of the People's Co-ordination for Democratic Rights (PCDR), a conglomeration of various political and non-political parties in the BTAD, today at Dotma in Kokrajhar. The announcement of the new party came ahead of the Assam Assembly election scheduled for next year.

The development is likely to have a far-reaching impact on politics in the Bodo belt, which is dominated by the BPF, sources said.

The party will field candidates for the upcoming election, though it did not say for how many seats it would contest.

A senior party member said the new party was formed uniting two regional political parties, the Bodoland Peoples' Progressive Front (BPPF) and United Democratic People's Front (UDPF), apart from the PCDR members. With the floating of the new party, both the BPPF and UDPF were dissolved unanimously.

The PCDR, however, will function with a new committee, as many of the present committee members, including chief coordinator Rwngwra Narzary, have joined the new party, sources said.

"The PCDR is a non-political body formed to bridge various committees and will remain in force," said Absu president Pramod Boro. On the new party, he said there is a need for a strong political party that will work and act as the people's voice.

The PCDR, backed by Absu, contested in the last BTC election and gave a tough contest to the ruling Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF), winning seven seats and losing by close margins in many other seats.

Talking to reporters, the UPP president U.G. Brahma said the party was floated with a clear ideology of working for the welfare of the people, irrespective of caste, creed and religion. He said people wanted change and a new party could highlight the misrule and corruption occurring under the BPF administration in the BTC, adding that the party will works for development and check corruption.
