Kohima, Aug. 16: The Nagaland government adopted a new state logo on Independence Day yesterday, retaining only the mithun from an earlier design.

This was announced by chief minister Neiphiu Rio during the Independence Day speech here. A picture of a mithun (bison), in black and white, is surrounded by green grass and enclosed in a red circle. The words ?Unity? and ?Government of Nagaland? have been retained from the earlier logo, which had several other traditional motifs as well. However, the Opposition Congress had earlier opposed the decision of the government, criticising it for not taking the Assembly into confidence.

Now, however, the party is keeping quiet. Rio described the logo?s ?majestic mithun on grassland in hilly terrain?. He said the word ?unity? represents the binding force, as also the dreams and aspirations of the Nagas.
