Guwahati, Sept. 7: Defending champions Navajyoti Club inched closer to the runners-up position in the R.G. Baruah Guwahati Super Division Football League, humiliating Gauhati Town Club 6-1 in a one-sided in a league outing at Nehru Stadium here today.
Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) SC, NF Raliway SC and Navajyoti Club have 11 points each in their kitty, but ASEB top the chart with better goal difference while Navajyoti and NF Railway follow in the second and third positions.
If ASEB loses tomorrow's match (the last match of the league) by a margin of more than three goals, they will finish runners-up.
Today's was an effortless six-goal win without any substantial counter-attack.
The first half was a goalless affair. The first goal was scored by K. Lalchhanhima off Manjit Rabha's left flank pass in the 48th minute.
The next came goal three minutes later when Clever G. Momin received a pass from Nigerian recruit Nwokwu Michael Okwudili from inside the box and tapped it in.
In the 60th minute, Okwudili capitalised on skipper Timothy Onyenka's pass from inside the box to net the third.
In 68th minute, Manjit Rabha ruffled the net with a half volley from a few steps outside the box. A minute later, Michael shot in another goal.
GTC managed their solitary goal through substitute Asish Thapa in the 79th minute. However, it was not the end of GTC's woes. Tenjing Joseph Nokrek netted the final goal for Navajyoti to make it 6-1 in the 85th minute.
Assam team: The All-Assam Chess Association named the state team for the 30th National Open and Girls' Chess Championship at Puducherry from September 19. The players are Mrinmoy Rajkhowa, Priyangshu Goswami, Kasturi Kalita and Writkriti Raj.
Anniversary: The United Karate Guild obeserved its first anniversary at its dojo here on Saturday. State sports minister Naba Kumar Doley and others attended the ceremony where nearly 400 trainees and sports enthusiasts participated.
