Shillong, Jan. 20: The prestigious Meghalaya Day Award will be conferred upon Eugeneson Lyngdoh, named Indian Player of the Year by the All India Football Federation, for his contribution to sports.
Two other distinguished personalities of the state, Headingson Ryntathiang and Rev. F.D. Sangma, will also be awarded for their contributions in the fields of arts and literature and social service respectively.
Eugene, a central midfielder currently representing the Indian football team and I-League club Bengaluru FC, will be given the Kiang Nangbah Award, named after freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah.
Ryntathiang, a renowned singer, will be given the Tirot Sing Award, named after freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem, while Sangma will receive the Pa Togan Award, named after Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma, a freedom fighter from Garo hills.
The awards were announced by chief minister Mukul Sangma today after a cabinet meeting here.
Eugene, 29, who made his debut in the I-League on September 22, 2013, playing for Rangdajied United FC, and has played for I-League club Shillong Lajong FC, was signed by Indian Super League club Pune City, for Rs 1.05 crore last year.
On December 20, 2015, he was voted by the coaches in the I-League as the best Indian footballer and named the 2015 AIFF Player of the Year.
The honours he has earned include I-League Midfielder of the Year: 2014-15, Football Player Association of India's Player of the Year: 2014-15, Bengaluru FC Fan's Player of the Year: 2014-15 and Bengaluru FC Player's Player of the Year: 2014-15.
Meghalaya Day will be celebrated tomorrow but the awards will be given to the recipients by Governor V. Shanmuganathan on Republic Day.
