Guwahati, Feb. 6: The Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education (LNUPE) on Saturday laid the foundation of a swimming pool and a boys’ hostel on the 225-bigha Northeast campus with the state government almost on the verge of handing over the Tepesia Sports Complex infrastructure permanently to them.
To be built at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore, the swimming pool will be of 25x16 metres in dimension, with facilities for diving.
The Rs 10-crore estimated cost for the boys’ hostel will comprise facilities to accommodate 150 beds, which could be extended to a capacity of 200 beds.
The foundation for both the swimming pool and the hostel was laid by sports minister Ajit Singh, in the presence of LNUPE registrar L.N. Sarkar and others.
The university also proposes to build another hostel for girls at a cost of around Rs 6 crore.
Singh promised all support from the state government in the future development of the campus.
Sarkar said Rs 135 crore has been sanctioned in the Twelfth Plan for the upgrade of the campus.
It was at the initiative of chief minister Tarun Gogoi that the Gwalior-based university opened its regional campus at the Tepesia Complex here in 2009 on a temporary basis for five years.
However, after the National Games, the secretariat handed over the infrastructure and equipment to the government and the Sports Authority of Assam.
The infrastructure comprises a velodrome, an indoor stadium, an archery range with dressing rooms, kho-kho and kabaddi turf with dressing rooms, football turf and a hostel, apart from a water body.
“The paper work is almost complete for a lease-out of 99 years, which will be followed by a formal transfer of the land to the university,” a official in the sports department said.
The velodrome is the only of its kind in the entire state.
