Silchar, Sept. 30: A 35-year-old woman, who was electrocuted, died "without medical treatment" at Tikol village in Cachar district today because no staff were present at the nearby model hospital.
The incident happened on a day when Assam's minister for transport, excise, sports and youth affairs, Ajit Singh, was lauding the government for building the model hospital at Tikol while speaking at the inauguration of a road at the nearby village of Salganga.
Tikol village falls under Singh's home constituency, Udharbond.
The victim, Labanya Prabha Deb, was electrocuted this afternoon while trying to pump water from a pond using an electric motor.
After the incident, she was immediately taken to the nearby Tikol model hospital but no one was present at the facility. The family members of the victim also tried to hire the ambulance of the hospital to take her to Udharbond public health centre, but no driver could be found either.
Das died on the way to Udharbond public health centre where doctors declared her "brought dead". A doctor of the health centre told this correspondent that Labanya might have been saved if she received a Decadron injection in time.
Das's death sparked anger among locals who blocked the Silchar-Kumbhirgram Airport road at Udharbond this afternoon. The mob also stopped the vehicle of Singh, who was coming from Salganga to Udharbond, and raised slogans against the Assam government and the state health department.
Sudip Jyoti Das, Cachar joint director of health services, told The Telegraph this evening that two doctors were attached to the model hospital. "One doctor is on leave and another doctor today was attending a health programme in Silchar," he said.
The hospital had a nurse who stays in the nearby quarters, he added.
