Imphal, Feb. 18: With the main accused in the Chungkham Sanjit killing case ready to "reveal" before court the circumstances leading to the murder of an unarmed youth, citizens' organisations have started chalking out strategies for another round of agitation.

Head constable Thounaojam Herojit, who had told the media last month that he had shot unarmed Sanjit, 22, a former militant, from close range on the orders of the then additional superintendent of police Akoijam Jhalajit Singh, last night said he would tell the same story when an Imphal court hears the case on Saturday.

Sanjit was killed inside a drug store in Imphal city in broad day light by the police shortly after a pregnant woman was hit by a bullet at a spot not very far from the drug store on July 23, 2009. The woman also died on the spot.

The police had claimed that Sanjit was killed in an exchange of fire during a hunt for the man whose bullet hit Rabina. Following a public uproar, the CBI had probed the case and an Imphal court is holding the trial. The CBI listed nine police personnel, including Herojit, as the accused in the murder case.

Herojit yesterday got an affidavit of his "disclosure" and said he would not only tell his story before the court during the next hearing but would also submit the affidavit before the trial court.

"I plead absolute guilt of the inhuman crime I had committed by just following order of a superior officer. I am giving this admission for ends of justice and security of the people upon realisation of the irreparable and preventable damages that I had caused to the victim (Sanjit) and his family," Herojit's affidavit said.

"I am happy for the trust reposed on a killer like me. I will not let the people down. I will tell the truth in the court," Herojit said.

Rights groups and citizen organisations are keeping in touch with Herojit regularly to chalk out their strategies and ensure justice in the case. "We are preparing to launch an agitation in Sanjit and Rabina case. We are monitoring developments in the court that is holding the trial. We will soon take a decision on our course of action," a rights activist said.

Residents of Khurai, the neighbourhood where Sanjit lived, staged a sit-in at Khurai Lamlong market yesterday, demanding justice in the case.

"We will renew our agitation after Herojit gives his statement in the court. The public has always been suspecting that Sanjit's is a fake encounter case. Herojit's disclosure has confirmed our suspicion. We will not remain silent," Th. Anita, convener of Sanjit joint action committee, said.
