Guwahati, Aug. 18: The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) has denied reports that Wasim Iqbal Ansari, a student from Assam whose body was found lying on a pathway on the university campus in Calcutta on Monday night, had committed suicide.

“It has been noticed that there are various unsubstantiated and factually incorrect news reports in the print and Internet media where the incident has been reported as a case of suicide. Iqbal has been portrayed as a student of questionable health who could not cope with the academic requirements of the university. On the contrary, the university would like to state that Iqbal was a student with the calibre to cope with the regular rigours of academic and extra-curricular activities,” a press communiqué issued by the assistant registrar of the university said.

Iqbal, 23, was a fourth year law student of the NUJS. He was a resident of Guwahati and had been studying in the university since 2008. He used to stay at a rented apartment near Ruby Hospital with his mother.

The press communiqué said the Bidhan Nagar (South) police after an investigation concluded that it was a case of unnatural death and subsequent post-mortem report stated that Iqbal succumbed to his injuries after falling from a height.

“The university would like to reiterate the same and all contradictory statements and reports, previous and in the future, are to disregarded,” the press release stated.

In Tezpur, Iqbal’s mother Iftika Ansari, said the family does not suspect foul play in the death of her son.
