Unauthorized slaughtering of animals has come to notice of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and it has asked meat vendors resorting to the practice to adhere to norms laid down by the corporation.

The GMC said meat sellers are requested to slaughter animals at designated places after certifying ante-mortem and post-mortem examination from the GMC’s authorized veterinary doctor, otherwise necessary action will be taken against the defaulters.

“Majority of the meat vendors are violating the norms laid down by the department while slaughtering animals and performing slaughter on their own premises as well as selling meat without following the due procedure such as ante-mortem or post-mortem …” the GMC stated.

Unauthorized slaughter of animals violates Prevention of Cruelty to animal Act 1960, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules 2001, Guwahati Municipal Corporation Slaughter House Act, 2012.
