Mangaldoi, Sept. 7: Last year’s runners-up Green Valley Sports Club stormed into the semi-finals of the Amba Medhi football tournament blanking out Assam Police Blues 3-0 in the last all-Guwahati quarter-final at Mangaldoi Stadium here today.

The Green Valley men gained the upper hand as early as the fifth minute with Anupam Chetia ruffling the net for the first goal. Conceding the goal, the policemen resorted to their trademark rough tackles causing injuries to the opponent players. This continued till midway into the second half when the Green Valley side were awarded a spot kick when police defenders brought down striker Abraham Goodluck inside the danger zone.

Goodluck made no mistake in converting the shot in the 67th minute to consolidate the lead.

Dhananjoy Brahma netted the third goal for the winners by heading in a pass from Prasanta Sinha from the right flank in the 70th minute to take a 3-0 lead.

Trailing by three goals, the policemen made an all-out effort to reduce the margin till the last minute of the match but failed to make the desired inroads because of the defensive strategy adopted by their opponents in the later part of the match.

Green Valley will now meet former champions Oil India Ltd, Duliajan, in the second semi-final on Tuesday.

Defending champions Assam Rifles, Tezpur, will play Nagaland Police in the first semi-final tomorrow.
