Guwahati, Aug. 27: The AGP will look into the issues raised by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) before taking any decision on the merger of regional parties, its president Brindaban Goswami said today, a day after the AGP executive forwarded the unification proposal to its general body.
Goswami raised doubts about the success of the unification process and told the media at the party’s headquarters that the AGP could not survive ignoring organisations like AASU.
The students’ union objected to the return of AGP (P) president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta into the AGP fold, terming him as an architect of “secret killings” that rocked the state during his tenure as chief minister.
In a tangential swipe at Mahanta, Goswami said he was shocked and pained to learn that a team of “secret killers” were sent to the residence of former home minister Bhrigu Kumar Phukan during the AGP rule.
The AASU had recently alleged that Mahanta had even sent secret killers to the residence of Phukan, a claim strongly refuted by the former chief minister.
Goswami said that the party would also deliberate on the issue of secret killings before reaching any conclusion on the unification of the party with its breakaway groups.
The AGP today announced the names of Sarbananda Sonowal and Arun Sarma as its candidates for the Dibrugarh and the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seats.
