Gold biscuits, bars seized

A team of customs preventive force, Moreh, and the anti-smuggling unit, Imphal, seized 40 gold biscuits along the Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district on Monday.

Imphal: A team of customs preventive force, Moreh, and the anti-smuggling unit, Imphal, seized 40 gold biscuits along the Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district on Monday.

Another 20 gold biscuits, weighing 3.316kg, were also seized on the same day by a team of Assam Rifles and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

Assistant commissioner, customs, R.K. Darendrajit Singh, on Tuesday said 40 gold biscuits were seized from one Md Askar, 40, of Imphal West, on National Highway 102 (Imphal-Moreh road) at Khudengthabi. The gold biscuits, weighing 6.64kg, and valued at Rs 2.05 crore, were found in a specially built cavity of a Tata tipper truck going towards Imphal, he said. Askar was arrested and investigation is going on, the officer said.

He said the anti-smuggling unit has so far seized smuggled items like cigarettes, shoes and mosquito coils valued at Rs 1.5 crore and arrested two persons.

An Assam Rifles statement on Tuesday said a smuggler carrying 20 gold bars valued at Rs 1 crore was arrested at the Khudengthabi checkpost.

It said a joint team of Assam Rifles and DRI, acting on information, stopped a van going from Moreh to Imphal and after thorough checking, the gold bars, weighing 3.316kg, were found inside the fuel tank. Md Gayaauddin, 28, of Lilong Turel Ahanbi, Thoubal, was apprehended.

The gold bars and the smuggler were handed over to DRI, the release said.

The customs division, Imphal, has seized 27.5kg gold, valued at Rs 8.5 crore, since April. At least 20 people have been arrested for gold smuggling during two-and-a-half months.
