German coach for Wahingdoh

Shillong, June 22: Royal Wahingdoh FC has appointed 63-year-old German Volker Hofferbert as its head coach.

Hofferbert, an international football coach with a UEFA Pro Licence, also has a master’s degree in sports science and was a former faculty of physical education in the University of Cologne.

A statement issued by the club said the German has over three decades of experience with coaching assignments in Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Iceland, Yemen, Romania and Laos.

He was also the former head coach of the Yemen national football team and most recently has been in charge of building sporting infrastructure in Laos with specialisation in youth and women’s football.

Hofferbert was also the head coach of the University Team of Cologne, and the Icelandic Professional Club Valur Reykjavik, which won two championships and took part in the Champions’ League against English club Aston Villa.

Moreover, he was the head coach of Al Majid, Yemen Second Division Football Club, which he led in 1987 to the first and till now their only Cup win in history.

The German was also the advisor of U-17 Laos National Team 2007, which won the Vice Asian Championship AFF in 2007.

Further, he was head coach of the Laos women’s national team, which saw a jump in the FIFA rankings from 123rd position up to 70th in 2009.

The other areas of Hofferbert’s specialisation include teaching and training of young people aged between eight and 20 years, continuous education programmes for physical education teachers and coaches, design and organisation of sporting events and preparation of competitions, concepts to develop women’s football and others.

Hofferbert will be assisted by L. Nandakumar Singh of Manipur and Carlton Chapman.

Singh, an A licence coach from Manipur who has coached the Manipur team in the Santosh Trophy as well as the T. Ao Memorial Trophy, has also joined the coaching staff of Royal Wahingdoh.
