Guwahati, Nov. 8: Sattriya artistes and exponents from across Assam will assemble here to promote the classical dance form at the 10th Nritya Parva from November 15.

Sattriya Kendra, a city-based centre for promotion of the classical dance form, music and theatre traditions, is organising the five-day festival at the ITA Centre for Performing Arts, Machkhowa.

“Nritya Parva offers an opportunity for Sattriya artistes to showcase the best of old and new dance forms. This year, eminent Sattriya artistes Jatin Goswami and Naren Chandra Baruah, among others, will take part in the event. Besides, artistes from across the state will perform solo, duet and group gayan-bayan,” the project director of the kendra, Dulal Roy, said.

The Sattriya Kendra was set up two years ago as part of the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s initiative to support the danceform and allied traditions.

“There will also be a series of seminars and lectures on topics such as ‘Teaching process of Sattriya dance within the satra’ and ‘Teaching process of Sattriya dance outside the satra’ by exponents of the dance form during the festival,” Roy said.

“November 15 is an auspicious day, as Sattriya was declared a classical dance form by Sangeet Natak Akademi on this day in 2000. Hence, the festival is annually held on November 15,” Roy said.

“A decade after being declared a classical dance form, Sattriya today has won accolades across the globe,” said Ghanakanta Bora Barbayan, an exponent of the dance form. Barbayan will be directing a solo and a group performance during the festival.

“The declaration of Sattriya as a classical dance form is significant, as several artistes have since showcased the art form on various platforms across the world,” Sattriya expert Jatin Goswami said.

Apart from artistes from the city, troupes from Badala Padma Ata Kristi Kendra and Beguri Satra Sanskritik Bikas Samiti (from Narayanpur), Uttar Kamalabari Satra, Mayamora Vishnu Bali Kunchi Satra, Kamargaon Anchalik Silpi Samaj and Srimanta Sankardev Kala Parishad, Bhogpur Satra (from Majuli) and Dibrugarh-based Sattriya Sangeet Vidyalaya will perform at the festival from November 15 to 18.

Besides, experts from Bhogpur Satra (Titabor), Uttar Kamalabari Satra, Kamalabari Satra and the city will take part in the seminars and lectures scheduled from November 17 to 19.
