Jorhat, July 19: The two teenagers found inside a cinema hall here yesterday with their throats slit today denied making a suicide pact.
The couple reportedly told police they had cut their own throats following a quarrel.
Some viewers of the matinee show of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag had found the bleeding couple in their seats in the balcony section of Eleye cinema hall around 2pm yesterday.
Both the girl and the boy, aged around 19, underwent surgery at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital last evening. JMCH sources said their condition was improving and both were out of danger.
Jorhat superintendent of police Sanjukta Parasor told The Telegraph that in their statements, the couple said they had no plan to commit suicide and had not gone to the hall to end their lives.
Parasor said both first year college students said they had quarrelled while watching the film and the girl, in an act of frenzy, slashed her throat with a knife that the boy had brought for her on her request. Seeing this, the boy, too, grabbed the knife and did the same to himself, Parasor said, quoting the duo. The girl, who stays in a hostel here, had reportedly asked him to bring her a kitchen knife, as she often needed it at her hostel. .
She said the police had no photograph showing that the couple’s hands were tied with a dupatta. Actually, she said, the girl’s dupatta was simply lying across their arms.
