DPS emerge champions

SCHOOL CRICKET

Guwahati, March 30: Delhi Public School (DPS) defeated Modern English School by 24 runs to emerge champions of the Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) inter-school tournament at Dispur Parade ground here.

In an evenly contested final today, the DPS batsmen, after being put in to bat, were bowled out for 176 in 28.5 overs. Hrishikesh Tamuly led the DPS onslaught and hit a classy 72. He was supported by Paban Thakuria and Rio Pramanik who chipped in with valuable knocks of 20 respectively. For Modern, Jyotipam Das, Hirakjyoti Pathak and Gaurav Kumar took two wickets each.

In reply, the Modern batsmen struggled to keep up with the run rate as they lost wickets at regular intervals and were restricted to 152 for eight in the stipulated 30 overs.

Abhijit Sonowal, however, put up a stiff fight and hit a dogged 39 before returning to the pavilion. Hirakjyoti Pathak, too, offered resistance to remain unbeaten on 21, but he ran out of partners in the end.

The DPS bowlers stuck to an ideal line and length. Hillol Talukdar took three for 25 runs while Man of the Match Akshay Narayan scalped three wickets for 27 runs.

Hrishikesh Tamuly was named the Best Batsman of the meet while Debasish Saikia of Modern was adjudged the Best Bowler.
