Guwahati, Jan. 9: As part of its initiatives to propagate the philosophy and teachings of Srimanta Xankardeb at the national and international forum, the Assam government has announced a grant of Rs 50 lakh to set up a namghar (Vaishnavite community prayer hall) in Bangalore.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced the aid to Bangalore-based Srimanta Sankardev Sanskritik Samaj.

The cash assistance has been doled out in view of the cultural and spiritual needs of Assamese people living in the Karnataka capital and to spread the teachings of the Vaishnavite saint in the south Indian state.

Dispur has already initiated the step of setting up a namghar in New Delhi along with other places in the country and has directed the resident commissioner of Assam Bhawan in New Delhi to look for a suitable plot of land.

Sonowal has deputed industry and commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary to represent Assam in the 8th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit that began today. Patowary has been asked to project the Assam government's initiatives to usher in a sustainable long-term growth and inclusive development programme at the summit.

Patowary will exploit avenues to draw the attention of potential investors to take up ventures in Assam.
