Guwahati, March 10: The state government has barred the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council from making further appointments to the council without prior permission from Dispur.

This was conveyed by chief secretary P.C. Sharma during an appearance in Gauhati High Court this afternoon in connection with queries raised by a member of the autonomous council, Kulendra Daulagupu, over alleged non-co-operation by the government towards the council in discharge of its duties.

Additional senior government advocate B.J. Talukdar, who represented Sharma, said, “Among other steps to ensure smooth functioning of the council, the chief secretary informed the court that Dispur would meet the salary shortfall provided the council gave no further appointments without prior permission of the state government.”

Sharma’s submission before Justice Brojendra Prasad Katakey, in effect, means a bar on further recruitment without Dispur’s nod. The case will come up for hearing again on March 19.

The council had been making irregular appointments for nearly a decade.

A government official said this evening that the council had also been asked to enter into a written agreement with Dispur about not creating any post without the latter’s nod.
