Silchar, Nov. 6: The first case of dengue has been detected in Silchar.

The blood test reports of a 15-year-old boy who was admitted to a private hospital here a few days ago to be treated for fever, confirmed that he was suffering from dengue.

Ajit Bhattacharjee, an officer of the Cachar integrated disease surveillance programme, said there was nothing to worry about, as the boy contracted the virus during his stay in Guwahati.

Sources said the boy was staying at Ganeshguri in Guwahati for a week in October.

Later he went to Silchar, where he fell ill.

"We have been maintaining a strict vigil. No dengue case has yet been reported from any part of Cachar district. An adequate number of medicine kits are available at Silchar Medical College and Hospital," he added.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently said an entomological survey, carried out in 754 households of the city had revealed that the dengue-causing Aedes aegypti mosquito was breeding in nine households in Fatasil Ambari, Christianbasti and Basistha in the city. "Nine of the 754 houses surveyed revealed the presence of the mosquito, indicating that dengue is no longer a foreign disease. These mosquitoes are breeding right in our backyard," he had added.

According to recent government records, two persons have died of dengue - in Guwahati and in Golaghat.
