Dainik Batori, lensmen win

Guwahati, March 14: Dainik Batori and Photo Journalists registered huge victories in their respective matches of the 10th Guwahati Press Club inter-media cricket tournament that got under way at the Latasil ground today.

While Dainik Batori tamed Assam Tribune by 74 runs in the morning match, the lensmen crushed The Sentinel by 132 runs in the afternoon.

In the lung opener, Dainik Batori elected to bat and piled up a mammoth total of 216 for five in the stipulated 20 overs. Chasing 217, Assam Tribune could only score 142 for nine.

Raju Bharali topscored for Dainik Batori with an unbeaten 90 while teenager Biswajit Mazinder Baruah chipped in with 87. Lakhya Gohain was the only economic Assam Tribune bowler claiming a wicket for 28 runs.

For Assam Tribune, Saurav Bora scored an undefeated 28 and Hiren Nath contributed 22. Mazinder Baruah and Sibanu Bora of Dainik Batori took two wickets each giving away 18 and 41 runs.

Prior to the match, Assam Tribune had alleged that at least two of the players fielded by Dainik Batori were underage. They alleged that the duo were members of a district sports association and participated in inter-district under-17 tournaments till last season. However, Assam Tribune did not lodge any formal protest with the organisers.

The Assam Cricket Association has, meanwhile, asked its registered players not to get involved in any controversy related to the inter-media cricket tournament by representing any team as “hired players”. ACA secretary Bikash Baruah has warned of “stern disciplinary action” against any errant player.

In the second match, the Photo Journalists piled up 211 for five in 20 overs and later bowled out The Sentinel for 79 runs.

Rituraj Konwar (84) topscored for the lensmen while Nitya Deka contributed 56. Sunil Dutta of The Sentinel notched up two wickets for 32.

For The Sentinel, Sunil Dutta remained unbeaten on 20 while Pritam Baruah contributed 18.

Lensmen Kunal Boro and Pitambar Newar took three wickets. Nitya Deka captured two for six.

In tomorrow’s matches, GL Publications will play Gup Shup and Asomiya Pratidin meet NE Television.

Dhekial School in final

Dhekial HS School and Kukuhating High school will play in the final of the CRPF Friendship Football Tournament at Golaghat stadium tomorrow, reports our correspondent from Dergaon.
