Haflong, Oct. 22: Assam governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya has ordered a special session of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council on Saturday to elect its new chief executive member.

On October 17, Congress leader Debojeet Thaosen resigned from the post of chief executive member even before the start of a special session of the council to prove his majority. The special session was convened after the BJP staked claim before the governor to form a new council. The BJP met the governor on October 10 and staked claim after the Thaosen-led Congress council became a minority.

The governor has asked the council's chairman Namrathong Hmar to convene Saturday's session from 10 am here. The governor has also asked Hmar to make necessary arrangements as per rules to help a new executive committee run the council.

The fortunes of the BJP changed on October 9 when five executive members and four other members of the council joined the party.

Arms haul: Troops of Aizawl- based 39th Battalion of Assam Rifles today seized a cache of arms comprising eight AK-47 and AK-56 rifles and 12 magazines from Serchhip district in Mizoram. Acting on intelligence inputs, troops organised a special mobile vehicle check between Keitum and Khawlialung villages. Hronchunga, 55, and Uanpuilala, 30, were arrested in this connection.
