Imphal, Nov. 20: Cosmopolitan Youth Club registered a 4-1 win against Hockey Union in the opening match of the 2nd G. Khelchandra Men’s Open Hockey Tournament at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium here today.
Seven teams, including Khongman Students Club, Cosmopolitan Youth Club, Hockey Union, Manipur Police Sports Club, Moral Education Intellectual Renascent and Athletic Association, Posterior Hockey Academy, Manipur and South Eastern Youth Organisation, are participating in the tournament, organised by the Imphal East District Hockey Association.
Lack of co-ordination let down the Hockey Union team today while Cosmopolitan Youth Club rode high.
The Cosmopolitan men took the early lead in the 12th minute of the game as skipper Rk. Bikramjit Singh came up with the first field goal. Invading the rival territory at regular intervals, Cosmopolitan soon consolidated the lead in the 30th minute from Th. Hemjit Singh to make the scoreline 2-0 at the end of the first half.
Resuming in the second half, though Hockey Union tried to regain its composure, it was the staunch Cosmopolitan defence that kept them at bay without much success for a long period of time.
M. Mirple Singh led the assault for Cosmopolitan and did the damage in the 41st minute with a field goal and P. Hemjit Singh squared up with his team’s fourth goal in the 50th minute with a penalty corner conversion.
It was fortunate for Hockey Union, who were finally rewarded with a consolation goal in the 69th minute with W. Jonny Singh scoring from a field goal.
Cosmopolitan today fetched four penalty corners and converted one, while Hockey Union bagged six and wasted all.
Hockey Union player L. Lee John and Cosmopolitan’s W. Dine Singh received a yellow card, while Ch. Dayananda Singh of Hockey Union was shown a green card.
