Guwahati, June 6: Police and CRPF personnel today stopped hundreds of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and its party, Gana Mukti Sangram Asom, members from storming the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) compound here.

The protesters had gathered at the office to demand a CBI inquiry into alleged anomalies in the Assam civil and allied services examinations.

The protesters also demanded the immediate removal of the commission's chairman, Rakesh Kumar Paul.

The KMSS had recently alleged that the commission had sidelined those with good educational background.

"We have received complaints from candidates on how the son and daughter of a former chairman of the commission cleared the examination this year despite their poor educational background. So we demand a CBI inquiry into the allegations of corruption and anomalies," KMSS adviser and convener of the new party Akhil Gogoi said.

The APSC conducts examinations for recruitment to the state civil services, police services, superintendents and inspectors of taxes and superintendents and inspectors of excise.

It also conducts examination for direct recruitment in various state government departments.

Altogether 241 candidates were selected for various posts, including civil services and police services.

However, many today expressed surprise over Akhil's alleged misbehaviour with police officers who stopped them from barging into the commission's compound.

"The police commissionerate had prohibited gathering of more than four persons in and around the APSC office under Section 144 CrPC and so we stopped them. But Akhil Gogoi misbehaved with our senior officers, alleging that they had also got jobs by paying bribes. How can a public leader like him make such a baseless allegation without any proof and behave in such an irresponsible manner?" a police officer asked.
