Shillong, Sept. 18: Leader of the Opposition in Meghalaya Assembly Conrad K. Sangma today said the controversial Ayodhya issue could have been resolved amicably had there been religious tolerance.

Addressing a gathering here to celebrate the 123rd anniversary of the birth of Khasi Unitarianism, Sangma said, “The Ayodhya issue has burnt and divided our country for ages. But had there been tolerance, we could have solved the issue amicably.”

He said September 24 was a “crucial” date in the history of the country as Allahabad High Court would finally deliver a verdict to end the six-decade-long legal stalemate over the ownership of the disputed Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.

While appreciating the harmonious relationship between different faiths in the state, Sangma said mutual respect for religions allows the country to move forward. He emphasised that one common factor among all religions is the faith in God.

The theme for the anniversary was Religion for Peace where leaders from different faiths also took part in the presence of hundreds of faithfuls from the Unitarian church.
