Sept. 18: The Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped will assist physically challenged persons to open up self-employment avenues in various computer-related fields.

The centre will introduce several job-orientated computer application courses, free of cost for physically handicapped persons. All the courses will commence from October 1 and will be of three months’ duration.

R. Lakshmana Samy, assistant director, VRC, said successful candidates would be assisted by the centre to start their own ventures, depending on which course they have received the training.

Eight different courses will be imparted of which seven will be of certificate-level and the other, a special course.

The certificates courses are Internet and Web page designing (Module II), Information Technology Tools and Application (Module I), Accounting with Tally (Module III), Programming in C/C++ (Module IV), Programming in V. Fox Pro (Module-V), Digital Photo Editing and Audio-Video Editing (Module VI), Desk Top Publishing (DTP) (Module VII).

There is also a special computer training programme for the visually impaired.

The assistant director said considering the employment situation, persons with disabilities face more difficulties while trying to earn a livelihood. Thus VRC has chosen computer training which will allow these people to earn a decent income.

The centre is also planning to introduce several new courses in mobile, Xerox machine and LPG stove repairing in the near future.

“Our aim is to assess the abilities of physically challenged people and accordingly fit them into suitable jobs or self-employment ventures through vocational and educational training,” said Samy.

“Hopefully, the centre’s computer courses will help mitigate unemployment among the disabled.”

Interested and eligible persons having cleared HSLC or HS and aged between 18 and 35 years, are requested to contact the centre along with their testimonials in support of their age, educational qualification and disability, on or before September 28 for interview and selection.
