Oct. 14: Candidates backed by the All Assam Students? Union (AASU) walked away with the top honours in the elections to the Gauhati Commerce College Students? Union.
The AASU nominees won four out of seven posts out of a total of 13 for which polling was held today. The lone aspirants for the remaining six posts have won unopposed.
AASU candidate Arjun Rongpi comfortably won the post of general secretary, edging past his nearest rival with 102 votes. Ridip Barman, Chandan Gogoi and Mantu Medhi bagged the posts of secretaries of debate and symposium, major games and boys? common room respectively.
The other posts to which polls were held today are assistant general secretary and vice-president (B.Com). The six candidates to be elected uncontested include AASU-nominated Abhijit Saikia as magazine secretary and Kuldip Talukdar as vice-president (M.Com).
An elated publicity secretary of Gauhati Commerce College?s AASU unit, Kuldip Sarma, attributed the union?s success to the AASU?s service towards education. He said the organisation is dedicated to maintaining the independent character of the college.
