The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), which did not win a single seat in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) polls held in May, on Thursday boasted eight members in the council.

The churning in the CADC started once the ZPM won the November 7 Assembly elections, the results of which were declared on December 4, but it took a formal shape on Thursday.

The ruling party formally apprised the CADC secretariat of the formation of the ZPM legislature party of the CADC at the residence of council member Doymoy Daveng Chakma during the day.

According to the minutes of the ZPMLP meeting, the letter sent to the CADC secretary stated the formation of the ZPM legislature party in the CADC, that all eight ZPM MDCs attended the meeting and “after prolonged discussion, the agenda to form the ZPM legislature party was unanimously adopted”.

All the eight MDCs had defected to the ZPM from the BJP (five), MNF (two) and Congress (one), four days after the ZPM stormed to power in the Assembly polls.

The MNF is currently ruling the CADC with 11 members. A CADC member said it is a matter of time before the ZPM stakes claim to form the council by dethroning the MNF.
