Car-lifters in Cachar police dragnet

Silchar, June 25: Police last night busted an inter-state gang of car-lifters by arresting three of its members at Lailapore village along the Assam-Mizoram border in Cachar district?s southern fringe.

Police sources said a posse of policemen waited for the gang members at Lailapore after getting a tip-off.

As the gang members reached the village in a light blue Maruti Zen along with a middle-aged person from Mizoram, identified as the prospective buyer of the car, the police pounced on them and took them into custody. During a nightlong grilling led by Cachar district additional superintendent of police Bipulananda Choudhury, the arrested persons confessed that they had masterminded the theft of the car at Guwahati in collaboration with another car-lifter identified by them as Siddartha Choudhury.

The arrested include Raj Borgohain, Dinesh Singh and Shyam Kumar Tewary. While Borgohain, who hails from Dibrugarh, currently resides at Chenikuthi in Guwahati, the other two gang members are residents of Aizawl in Mizoram.

L.T. Khuma, a businessman from Aizawl who was also picked up by the police along with the car-lifters, confessed that he had evinced interest in buying the stolen Maruti Zen. Currency notes amounting to Rs 2 lakh was seized from him.

Borgohain confessed that the gang has been operating in Nagaland and Mizoram.

The gang members confessed that most of the stolen cars were brought from Haryana and Delhi. Borgohain further said the stolen cars were sold mostly in Nagaland and Mizoram.

They also divulged that they have been maintaining a close nexus with a section of district transport department staff in Guwahati for procuring the registration of the stolen cars.

BNLF surrender

The Bru National Liberation Front will lay down arms in late July in accordance with the accord signed with the Mizoram government on April 26 this year, PTI reports from Aizawl, quoting Mizoram chief secretary H.V. Lringa.
