Guwahati: The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) on Sunday gave 250 bighas of land in lower Assam's Kokrajhar district to pro-talks Ulfa cadres to take up farming.

The land was ceremonially handed over to the Ulfa cadres by BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary at a function in Tintila, about 25km from Kokrajhar town, in the presence of BTC deputy chief Kampa Borgoyary and Ulfa general secretary Anup Chetia.

"At the function, Mohilary announced that land will also be given to Ulfa cadres in Udalguri, Chirang and Baksa districts for their rehabilitation," Chetia said.

He said they intend to develop these lands as farms by cultivating dragon fruit, apple berry, turmeric, baukul, among others, which have a high demand in domestic as well as in foreign markets.

"We want to grow unconventional fruits such as baukul, a variety of jujube fruit, which is very popular in Bangladesh. We also have plans to go for segun plantation," Chetia said.

He said they would submit a proposal to the government seeking financial support for their agriculture venture.

The BTC administration has constructed two houses in Tintila for Ulfa cadres to stay and work in the farms.

Nearly 1,500 Ulfa cadres are living in designated camps named Asom Nabanirman Kendras at Kakopathar in Tinsukia district, Moran in Dibrugarh, Jagiroad in Morigaon, Nalbari and Tihu in Nalbari, Sipajhar in Darrang and Goalpara since 2011.
