Shillong, April 3: BSF troops in Meghalaya today seized more than 40 head of cattle as smugglers continued to sneak in cattle into Bangladesh.
Troops deployed at Lukaichar in South Garo Hills district apprehended a smuggler who has been identified as Rubil Miya hailing from Assam's Dhubri district and seized eight head of cattle while he was attempting to smuggle them to the neighbouring country, a BSF official said.
In another incident, BSF troops deployed at Gopinathkilla in South West Garo Hills district seized 41 head of cattle, the official added.
"The price of beef in Bangladesh has gone up by 30 per cent. Earlier, it was Taka 280-290 per kilogram of beef. Now, it is around Taka 300-320 per kg," the official said.
However, he said the troops have been put on "high alert" to foil any attempt on the part of smugglers to transport cattle across the border.
