Nagaon, Aug. 15: More than 30 villages were submerged as two more dykes along the Kalang river were breached in central Assam's Nagaon district over the past 24 hours.
According to official sources, the embankments gave way at Misamukh and Bajiagaon localities in Samaguri area under Koliabor subdivision. While the Misamukh breach occurred around midnight, the breach at Bajiagaon took place this morning, affecting over one lakh people.
However, in the rest of Koliabor subdivision, where more than 80 revenue villages were inundated after Sunday's breach of the Hatimura dyke, the situation has started improving.
Nagaon deputy commissioner Shamsher Singh said the water level in Koliabor and adjoining areas was receding and National Highway 37, that connects Goalpara in lower Assam with Saikhowa Ghat in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district, was open today.
However, the receding of water level in Koliabor has led to a rise in the water level of the Kalang in Nagaon town, triggering panic among residents. The river was flowing 0.55 metres above danger level today.
