Guwahati, July 19: The father of actress Bidisha Bezbaruah, who was found hanging in her rented residence in Gurgaon on Monday, today claimed she wanted to divorce her husband over his alleged extramarital affair.

Bidisha's husband, Nishith Jha, who was detained by police yesterday over the charge of abetment to suicide, dowry harassment and domestic violence, was remanded in police custody for a day by a court in Gurgaon today as the police sought his "thorough interrogation". Jha works in a public relations company in Mumbai.

Bidisha's body was brought to her parents' home at Chenikuthi here this morning. Her last rites were carried out at Nabagraha crematorium where singers Zubeen Garg, Jubilee Baruah and Ritrishna Sarma, among others, were present.

"When she called me around 5pm on Monday, she said that she wanted to divorce Nishith as he was having an affair. I tried to console her saying things will improve in the course of time. But she said if I don't support her decision, she would delete my name from her life. She was depressed over her husband's extramarital affair," Bidisha's father Ashwini Bezbaruah told reporters at the crematorium.

Family sources said her body was also taken to Cotton University from where she had completed her graduation in English literature and diploma in mass communication.

"She was a jolly and fun-loving girl. I can't accept that she would take such an extreme decision," said Jubilee. "We met many times, worked together and the memories will always remain," said Zubeen.

Family sources said Bidisha and Nishith used to work in separate public relations companies in Mumbai and got married on April 28 last year. They said it was a love marriage but were not aware of how they had met.

Bidisha, however, joined a public relations company in New Delhi two weeks back and moved to her rented flat at Sushanta Apartment.

Sources said after she called her, Ashwini called Nishith, requesting him to go to her Delhi flat as she was depressed over her family life but he refused, saying he was busy. When her father called her again, he found Bidisha's mobile switched off. After being informed by her father that something was amiss, Nishith called the security guard of the apartment. The security guard then went up to check and found her flat locked from inside. He subsequently broke the door open around 7.30pm and found Bidisha hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom. He called the police who sent the body for autopsy.

Nishith was arrested last evening after being summoned to Sushant Lok police station in Gurgaon where Bidisha's father had lodged an FIR alleging that marital discord had forced her to take the extreme step.

"He has been booked under Section 306 of the IPC (abetment to suicide) and will be interrogated further to gather more details into the allegation," Gurgaon deputy commissioner of police (east) Deepak Saharan told The Telegraph over phone.
