Hailakandi, June 8: Barak Chanuralup (A) Club started their campaign on a positive note when they defeated Patimarra Youth Club by 8-2 goals in the opening match of the Samayik Prasanga Cup Open Prizemoney Women’s Football Championship at the Silchar Sporting Club playground in Silchar today.
Dayawati Singha was the star of the side netting five goals in the 4th, 8th, 17th, 28th and 53rd minutes while Phirthangpui Hmar, Anima Singha, Lamkim Hmar scored one goal each in the 10th, 20th and 34th minutes respectively.
The two goals for Youth Club came from Anju Urang and Bharati Bagti in the 36th and 52nd minute respectively.
The tournament organised by the District Sports Association of Silchar marked the beginning of Silchar’s football season.
It is for the second time the championship is being organised.
Altogether seven teams are participating in the championship and they have been divided into two groups.
Group A comprises three teams — Barak Chanuralup (A) of Rongpur, Patimara Youth Club and Bengal Boys’ Club of Silchar. Group B comprises four teams — Raising Club of Dolu, Dikrow Hosom of Hawaithang, Eleven Sisters of Laduma and Barak Chanuralup (B).
The winning team will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 5,000 while the runners-up will get Rs 3,000. The two teams, which will lose in the semi-finals, will get Rs 1,000 each.
The final of the championship will be held on June 17.
Cachar superintendent of police Violet Baruah inaugurated the championship.
and the chief guest of the inaugural ceremony was Union minister of state for heavy industries and public enterprises Sontosh Mohan Dev.
