Silchar, Nov. 24: Bangladesh industrialist Ragib Ali was handed over to authorities of the neighbouring country this evening after being detained by police in Assam's Karimganj district.

Police sources said Ali had come to India three months ago to evade arrest in two cases filed in a court in Sylhet district for forcefully grabbing land of an endowment property.

The court issued an arrest warrant against Ali and his son, Abdul Hye, on August 10.

Ali was handed over to Bangladesh police at Sutarkandi in Karimganj district.

According to sources, Ali owns eight tea estates, a medical college and hospital named Ragib-Rabeya Medical College at Jalalabad, an engineering college, a private bank and four degree colleges, among others, in Bangladesh. Sylhet's biggest eight-storied supermarket is also owned by him. He has business establishments in London, sources said. A village is named after him - Ragib Nagar - in Sylhet district.

Karimganj police said they had been keeping tabs on him since yesterday after he went to the superintendent of police's office for extension of his visa. Ali was picked up from the residence of AIUDF leader Abdul Aziz in Karimganj this morning.

Sources said he was planning to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Indian government to invest in the Cachar paper mill at Panchgram in Hailakandi district, which has not been functioning for the past year.
