Guwahati, Nov. 12: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will now award NGOs involved in cleaning the city on the basis of their performance.

In collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), the corporation will award the best performing NGO with a Maruti Alto, while the second and third-best organisations will be awarded Rs 1 lakh and Rs 60,000 respectively.

GMC commissioner S. Viswanathan, while announcing the awards today, said the prizes would be given under the Chief Minister’s Clean and Green Assam Mission and CII’s Clean Guwahati Mission.

On Monday, the corporation had announced cash prizes of Rs 1 lakh, Rs 80,000 and Rs 60,000 for the first, second and third-best NGOs.

The performances of the NGOs will be judged by the CII on various modalities, terms and conditions laid down for house-to-house segregated collection of garbage and sweeping of internal roads.

The corporation has also decided to award the ward committees of the best three wards Rs 10 lakh, Rs 6 lakh and Rs 4 lakh respectively.

On the other hand, the Kamrup (metro) district administration today launched a cleanliness and eviction drive around the LGBI Airport.

The drive, conducted under additional deputy commissioner Bharat Bhusan Dev Choudhury, was to remove more than 100 unauthorised shops in the area. The residents had earlier alleged that some shops were being used to sell illegal liquor. Choudhury said the drive would be carried out along the entire stretch from the airport to Jalukbari.

The administration said it has prepared a beautification scheme for the cleared areas.
