Jan. 21: Assamese actor Biju Phukan, who was admitted to a private hospital recently, will be shifted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for treatment tomorrow.

Authorities of the private hospital, where Phukan was admitted on January 6, today told The Telegraph that his condition was stable and he would be shifted to AIIMS tomorrow morning.

Phukan was first admitted to Nemcare Hospital at Bhangagarh on December 6 after he suffered a mild cerebral stroke and was released on December 27 after treatment. The popular actor, however, again had to be hospitalised for pneumonia and a minor heart attack on the night of January 5.

“Bijuda was shifted from the intensive care unit to the patient ward and doctors told us that his condition is stable. His family will take him to AIIMS for further treatment tomorrow morning,” said Geetali Chaliha, the public relations officer of the hospital.

The actor’s son, Angshuman, said: “Doctors told us that he would have to undergo an angiogram before deciding the future course of treatment. Since my father had a minor heart attack, doctors at AIIMS will suggest whether he requires an angioplasty or an open heart surgery.” Phukan’s wife, Rajashri, and son will accompany him to AIIMS.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi today met Phukan at the International Hospital. Gogoi also promised to arrange facilities at Assam Bhawan in Delhi and provide assistance for his treatment at AIIMS.

Phukan had suffered from a myocardial infarction, a type of heart attack, in the past but recovered. The 65-year-old actor, who hails from Dibrugarh, has been residing in the Wireless area here with his family for several years now.

Phukan started his acting career in 1970 with his debut in the evergreen Assamese movie Dr Bezbaruah and has worked in over 50 films so far.
