Shillong, Jan. 9: The alleged sexual exploitation of a teenager, in which a Meghalaya legislator is purportedly involved, has turned murkier with police naming eight more individuals involved in the crime.
With eight FIRs filed by the chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Meena Kharkongor, the police said that the 14-year-old victim was exploited by several others.
The case led to the arrest of legislator Julius K. Dorphang on Friday night from Guwahati. Two FIRs were lodged against the Independent legislator representing Mawhati constituency. He is now in police custody.
The first case against Dorphang was registered on December 24 last year at Laitumkhrah police station under Section 366 (A) of the IPC read with Section 3(a)/4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012, and under Section 5 of Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act (ITPA).
According to the police, Kharkongor had lodged a complaint based on a statement of the victim, revealing that the girl was sexually exploited by several persons. The police said they include Hasan, a scrap dealer, who allegedly sexually exploited the girl inside his shop.
A Khasi person from Borsora in South West Khasi Hills district allegedly sexually exploited the girl in a hotel at Khyndailad while one Hosor, who runs an archery counter, and an unidentified person sexually exploited her at the residence of Mamuni Parveen.
The girl worked as a domestic help in Parveen's house at Demthring.
The girl was allegedly taken to various guesthouses and hotels in the city and sexually exploited. Parveen has been arrested.
The police also alleged that one Apu, hailing from Jowai in West Jaintia Hills district, sexually exploited the girl while a man called Sagar had allegedly brought an armyman to Parveen's house who raped the girl.
The police said as per the complaint, even an elderly Khasi man from Dawki in West Jaintia Hills district, who was also Parveen's friend, raped the victim in Parveen's house and also in another house at Demthring on two occasions.
Further, it was alleged that one Prof. Roy sexually exploited the minor at Parveen's house.
So far, eight persons have been arrested in connection with the case.
Meghalaya Speaker Abu Taher Mondal today said he had been intimated by the police about the arrest of Dorphang.
He said that he had directed his office to inform all members of the Assembly.
"What has happened is unfortunate. After the police informed us about Dorphang's arrest, as per rules I also have to inform other members of the House. I have asked the Assembly staff to inform the members," Mondal told reporters here.
