Imphal: Police have detained five suspects in an attack on a non-local worker in Imphal city on Wednesday night and they are being interrogated.
Unidentified persons shot at a plumber, Abhas Mallik, 36, who hails from Odisha.
Giving information about the attack and detention of the five suspects in the state Assembly on Thursday, chief minister N. Biren Singh said an FIR had been registered and investigations are on.
Biren said two persons came to the rented house of the victim located near Nityananda temple along the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences road here and fired at him in front of his house.
The police said two bullets hit Mallik on his back and left arm. The injured is critical and undergoing treatment at Shija Hospitals.
Mallik, according official sources, has been staying in Imphal for the last six years. He lives with his father Bhramanand Mallik and a younger brother in the rented house.
The police are not disclosing details of the suspects as the investigation is at an initial stage.
"We will have a thorough investigation and all those involved in the attack will be punished according to law. At this moment we cannot say much about the motive of the attackers or who are behind it," a police official said.
