Imphal: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh instructed his officials to provided assistance to a family, where four members are visually impaired, during the Hill Leaders' Day and Meeyamgi Numit (people's day) camps held at the chief minister's secretariat here on Monday.

Biren Singh also said lessons on manners and discipline will be introduced in the education system as suggested by a boy who approached him at the camp. "It is disheartening to see a family where all the four girl members of the family are totally blind and haven't received any assistance from the government till now. This shows that many are still unaware of the government's schemes," he said.

The girls are from Huishu village of Ukhrul.

He instructed the officials concerned to provide assistance such as the Chief Ministergi Hakshelgi Tengbang (CMHT) card, monthly stipend of Rs 1,500 from Chief Ministergi Shotharabasingi Tengbang (CMST) and other benefits to the family members immediately. CMST is a health scheme that will provide financial assistance upto Rs 2 lakh for the needy.

The Hill Leaders' Day and Meeyamgi Numit were organised together because of Biren Singh's scheduled meeting at Niti Aayog, New Delhi, on Saturday.

Biren Singh said, "A young boy suggested that teachings on manners and discipline should be included in the formal education system of the state. Such suggestions are well taken and will be introduced in the education system after due discussion with education minister and officials concerned."

On a query about the welfare of the working journalists in the state, he said the government will increase the monthly pension of journalists from existing Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000 at the earliest. He said he would discuss the fixation of pay for working journalists with the labour department.
