Dibrugarh: Three hundred people joined the Anchalikatabadi Asom Gana Parishad (AAGP), a faction of the AGP, at a programme here on Monday.

The party was formed in March 2016 by a section of dissident AGP leaders after the regional party formed an alliance with the BJP ahead of the Assembly elections.

With the panchayat election a couple of months away, Monday's development assumes much significance as the party has been trying to emerge as a group which is concerned with the aspirations of Assam's indigenous population.

Academician Dinesh Baishya, the chief guest of the programme, said: "The government is not prioritising the burning issues of the state. It carried out eviction drives at Amchang in Guwahati, leaving indigenous people homeless. The government is harassing the genuine citizens in the name of eviction."

"Many non-political persons like lawyers, teachers, intellectuals, youths, students and farmers have shown interest in joining our party. Only a regional party like us can properly address the issues like unemployment, illegal migrants, insurgency, flood and erosion. Everyone has seen the performance of the earlier Congress government and the present government. The AGP, too, has deviated from its ideologies," AAGP president Sunil Rajkonwar said.

Dibrugarh Bar Association's president Ajit Borgohain, Dibrugarh University professor Pramathesh Bhattachayya were among those who joined the party along with several leaders of student and youth organisations on Monday.
