Tired of the same old drinks and the same party floor with blinding lights and DJs who play the same tracks on loop?

Well, party culture is changing, and the city’s younger crowd is driving this shift. On World Party Day today, here’s a look at some unconventional ways Gen Z is redefining what it means to celebrate. At these jamborees, the vibe matters more than the rulebook.

The big fake Indian wedding

It’s a wedding, but without the commitment. The fake wedding trend is essentially a themed party that recreates the grandeur of a big fat Indian wedding minus the pressure of rituals and intrusive relatives. The concept has struck a chord with Gen Z and young professionals who love the aesthetic, drama and collective joy of weddings, but prefer to skip the emotional and social baggage. In Kolkata, venues such as Tantra and The LaLiT Great Eastern Kolkata have hosted such high-energy soirees.

Coffee raves

Who says you need alcohol to let loose? Coffee raves swap cocktails for cappuccinos, offering high-energy music, dim lighting and a buzzing crowd fuelled by caffeine. In the city, Milloh Cafe in Sector V, Bidhannagar, has been at the forefront of this hangover-free trend.

All-girls cruise party

A party that sails — literally. Adding a fresh spin to nightlife, all-girls cruise parties are making waves with curated playlists, Bollywood beats and an ambience that feels both safe and liberating. The Nautilus Kolkata is among the organisers bringing this concept to life.

Bhajan jamming

Spirituality gets a contemporary remix with bhajan jamming sessions. Blending devotion with a relaxed, community-driven vibe, these gatherings feature live music, collective singing and youthful energy. Kirtan Kolkata, a Kolkata-based community, has been instrumental in popularising this format among the city’s younger crowd.

Silent disco

Imagine a dance floor where everyone is grooving — but you hear almost nothing. Silent discos use wireless headphones instead of loudspeakers, allowing partygoers to switch between multiple DJ channels and curate their own musical experience in real time. While hugely popular globally, silent discos are still a rarity in Kolkata, and this is exactly what will make them all the more intriguing when they do pop up.
