Monday’s smart showers had an impact on Tuesday. Though it was sunny, the weather was not unbearable on Tuesday. On Monday, a set of clouds formed near the system but drifted towards Nadia and Murshidabad. The same thing had happened on Sunday robbing Kolkata of rain. But on Monday another set of clouds brought the much-needed respite for Kolkatans. However, the temperature is likely to start rising from Wednesday again. 'But the conditions are good for thunderstorm activities. Even if Kolkata is dry and the districts get rain, the temperature in Kolkata is unlikely to shoot up to the heatwave level (40 degrees Celsius) at least in what remains of this month,' said a Met official

Eastern India’s largest vegetable wholesale market is coming up at Singur in Hooghly district. The market will come up on a 340-bigha land with an investment around Rs 750 crore and will provide employment to 1.5 lakh people. State agricultural marketing minister Becharam Manna along with principal secretary of the department A Subbiah visited the proposed site at Indrakhali in Singur with representatives from The Greater Kolkata, Fruit, Potato and Onion, Vegetable and Lemon Merchant’s Association which will execute the project. “This will be the biggest wholesale vegetable market in the state and the Posta market in central Kolkata will be shifted here,” the minister said. Trucks ferrying vegetables from different parts of the state will unload at the proposed market and will accordingly be transported to different city markets. People will work in shifts round-the-clock. There will be facilities for modern rest rooms for businessmen hailing from other states. The market will also have provision for cold storage, a fire station, a petrol pump, a power substation, a parking zone etc
