Innovation in traditional dance format was the central attraction of the programme presented by Rhythmosaic Dance Company, a part of the Padatik group at Padatik Little Theatre on May 20. Ronnie Shambik Ghose, a graduate from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts created a new vocabulary of dance, a rational combination of Indian Classical Dance and contemporary Western Dance forms. It was a collage of kathak, western ballet, chhau and various other forms, keeping each style’s essence intact.
The evening opened with sonata, a dance number by the beginners through which the methodology of movements and choreography came out in a synchronised manner. Vama, the piece-de-resistance exhibited the creative ability, mastery of rhythm and grasp of grammar of the talented dancer Mitul Ghose Sengupta. Her effortless virtuosity was evident throughout the presentation where she portrayed a woman, seeking her identity through an emotional odyssey.
The concluding item of the evening was fear, where Ronnie and Mitul, the husband-wife duo depicted the most vulnerable moments of this emotion. Ronnie’s interpretation was enhanced by Mitul’s soul-stirring expression, crisp kathak bols and agile movements of both the dancers.
