Q:I have a BCom degree from Calcutta University. I have also completed a financial accounting computer course from Brainware computer academy. Subsequently, I was appointed as an accountant in a flat-owner’s association in May 2005 but I quit the job last month. I have also worked as a business adviser in Tata AIG Life Insurance earlier.
Recently, I have been appointed as an accountant in a manufacturing concern. What courses should I opt for in order to get a job in a senior managerial position?
Sandip Chatterjee
A: I presume you enjoy finance and accounting as a profession. You can enhance those skills through a CFA or an MBA.
If you are interested in financial planning then a course of certified financial planner will help you in a career in private banking or investment consulting.
Q:I am from a business family and am 25 years old. I have completed my MBA this year and am teaching part-time in a private college.
I have enrolled in the CFA Institute, US. I have to take charge of my family business in future. Is CFA the right course for me?
Prakash Sen
Calcutta
A: Chartered Financial Accountancy or CFA is essentially used by financial analysts to study financial statements and understand them in depth. Therefore, knowledge of the same cannot do you any harm.
But I would also suggest that you go ahead and check out some short-term courses (that are available in almost all B-schools today) that teach about management of small businesses or family-run businesses.
