Q: I am a software engineer with four years of experience in banking. I would like to know how to enhance my prospects. Is doing MBA in the distance mode a good idea? What should my area of specialisation be? Are breaks in studies due to assignments or a high workload allowed in these courses?
Srineel Mazumdar
A: A distance learning course can’t be compared with a full-time course. However, it is the only recourse for someone wanting to pursue a degree along with a full-time job. Since you have to pursue your job, take up a part-time course where you could attend classes on weekends. This helps, as you will be able to interact and learn from classmates from diverse backgrounds. You can do a dual specialisation in finance and IT.
Q: I am 25 years old and working in a HR consultancy firm. I am pursuing MBA and have decided to specialise in HR. I want to teach in a management college. How should I go about it?
Sambit Ghosh
A: Many business houses are entering the field of higher education in India, thereby creating opportunities for freshers interested in becoming a faculty member. I would recommend that you speak to your college faculty because many colleges offer placements to their own students. Further, you can post your résumé on different job portals. You are sure to find a job to your liking.
Q: I have done BCom from Calcutta University in 2008. I am a customer care executive in Tech Mahindra BPO. How can I improve my career?
Gobind Shaw
A: An MBA degree will open new venues for you. It will give you a good theoretical grounding on different managerial aspects. I would recommend you do some research on placements obtained by the alumni of the course you intend to pursue.
Q: I am pursuing company secretaryship (CS). I want to know what other courses I can do along with CS to get good exposure in future. What are the prospects of CS?
Shibaji Santra
A: To supplement your finance degree, you can also opt for specialised courses such as CFA, offered by Icfai. The best way to find out the prospects of a course is to see where the alumni of that course are placed.
Q: I completed BTech (biomedical) in 2010 and joined a biomedical equipment company dealer as a service engineer. I am, however, not happy with the remuneration. What are the options for fresh graduates like me?
Oishik Chatterjee
A: I sympathise with your situation. However, all is not lost. According to the Indian Bureau of Labour Statistics, biomedical engineers have excellent job prospects and earning potential in the years to come. You can apply to companies that manufacture equipment as well as to hospitals and diagnostic centres. There are a few government agencies where you can apply for product testing, safety and establishing safety standards for devices. You can also post your résumé on different job portals. You are sure to find a job you like.
