Jamshedpur, April 27: Aston Villa and Sonari Sporting Club (SSC) advanced to the quarter-final of the 12th VG Gopal floodlight knock-out tennis ball cricket tournament.
In the second round matches played on Wednesday at the Gopal Maidan here, Aston Villa trounced Unique XI by eight wickets while SSC defeated Nav Yuvak Kalyan (NYK) by a slender margin of four runs.
Electing to bat first, Unique XI scored 71 runs losing eight wickets in their stipulated 10 overs. Barring Chhotu, who scored 19 (of 12 balls, 4x4), other batsmen failed to contribute much.
Sonu bowled well for Aston Villa, scalping four wickets for 30 runs. Jonty claimed two wickets while Ronny bagged one.
In reply, Aston Villa, thanks to some superb batting by Javed (29 runs of 21 balls) and Prem (28 not out off 22 balls), reached the target without much difficulty.
Tariq claimed two wickets for the losing side. Javed of Aston Villa was adjudged Man of the Match for his brilliant batting.
SSC faced trying times versus NYK in the other match of the evening. Opting to bat first, the SSC scored 62 for eight wickets in 10 overs before stopping their opponents at the score of 58, thus winning the match by a slim margin of four runs.
Abhishek top scored with 18 runs for SSC, while Preetam and Naresh contributed 10 runs each. Lal and Tapas claimed three and two wickets respectively for NYK. Anjan top scored with 15 runs for NYK while Santosh and Anjan managed 11 and 14 runs. Raju and Abhishek picked up two wickets each for the SSC.
